Finished skirt

Hello everyone,

So in my last post I talked about making my final skirt for pattern cutting and that is what I am going to be sharing in this post.

I decided to use a navy blue corduroy to make this skirt out of and I found mine at fabric land along with the other haberdasheries that I needed to make my skirt, such as thread, petersham, zips and hooks and eyes. When I constructed my skirt out of calico I used just under 3 metres of fabric however when I was making this out of my corduroy this was way to much as I did not think about the width of the fabric and I layed the pleat pieces out differently as the fabric had nap.

I found it relatively easy to sew the corduroy as it wasn't to slippy and went through the sewing machine easily. I did find it hard to unpick stitches if I made a mistake as the fabric had quite a loose weave so the stitches blended in. I am very happy with how my skirt turned out as I think that all the different pleats are very effective. One issue that I did have when making my skirt is that the hem terned out wonky when I had the raw edge, this did not happen on my calico skirt. I think this was because I had shortened the pattern from my calico skirt and it meant it wasn't all in line, this meant that I had to find a different way to hem it as I did not want to take any more length from the skirt once I had straightened it out. I ended up creating a false hem using bias binding but it did look like a double hem as I did two rows of stitching. I also had a issue with the pleats that they weren't structured enough for the top pleats to stay up so once I had finished making the skirt I used a fabric stiffener to make the fabric more structured and this worked really well.

This is how my final skirt turned out.

I hope you have enjoyed looking at my work and thank you for reading.
