Hello everyone,
So I have finished the mini assignment that we were given to complete by using adobe illustrator. The aim of this assignment was to practice and exicute the skills that we have been taught in the first term of college, to show these skills we were tasked to create a trainer design and a t-shirt design. These twodesignes would allow us to show the following techniques, pen tool, swatches, fill, clipping mask, gradients, object<arrange and placing a background image. When creating my shoe design I used the techniques of pen tool, swatches, fill, gradients, object<arrange and placing a background image. In my t-shirt design I used the techniques of fill, clipping mask, object<arrange and placing a bachground image.
Here is my finished shoe design that I created using adobe illustrator. One thing that I think was very successful was how I used the pen tool. After parcticing using the tool I was able to easily create curved lines and i think this was very successful for how I have traced the trainer. I think that the lines are very smooth and have created the shape of the show really well. Another thing that I think was successful was the way I have coloured the shoe, as I had traced around each of the sections of the trainer seperatly creating complete objects, it was very easy to use the fill and swatches tool to add the differnt colours I wanted to each section. One thing that I did notice while colouring in the shoe is that the fill and swatches tools are very similar, this confused me a bit as I wasnt sure if I had to use both for diiifernt things, I think that the main differnce bettween there two tools is that with the fill tool you have alot more of a veriety of colours and you can adjust the colour to how you want it. Where as with the swatches tool there is set colours which you have to use, but this does make it easy if you want to be using the same colour lots of times. Also with the swatches there is some set patterns that you can use which there isnt this option with the fill tool, aswell you can create your own pattern and add it to your swatches to easily add to objects. One thing that I think was not very successful is using object<arrange, I found this really confusing how to possition each of my seperate objects on top of eachother and this caused issures with how I layed out the shoe, even though I did get there in the end with how the objects needed to be arrange I think that I need more parctice using this tool so it becomes easier to arrange the objects. Another thing that was not very successful was adding small details to the shoe, when using the pen tool with smaller objects and small details, like adding texture or detail to sections on the shoe, this was quite difficult and the sections were alot smaller and you could not make them into complete obbjects to be able to add colour. I think to be able to do this more successfully I would need to make the pixel side for the pen tool a lot smaller, to create a thinner line, and I would need to zoom into the image I was tracing more so the details are bigger, this is why I have found a high quality image so that it does not become pixalated. If I were to do this again I think would seperate the shoe into more abjects so I can colour it in with more detail to make it look more realistic. I think I could also have added my own pattern that I created earler in the term, this would have appeared in the swatches tool bar and this would be easy to apply to any section of the shoe and it would show another technique that I have learn thought this term.
This is my completed t-shirt design that I have made for part of this mini assignment. One thing that I think was successful when I was creating this was placing the image into my art board on adobe illistrator. I have used this tool quite alot thought the term so I have become very confortable using it. It was successful because I had managed to keep the same scale of the image so it does not become obscured, I did this by holding the shift button while sizing the image. Another thing that I think was successful was creating the clipping mask. This was successful as I could use it easily to add the image to the inside of the text. I managed to do this by layering the image and text the correct why around so that the clipping mask worked and I had to use two differnt layers in illustrator, one for the clipping mask and one for the placed t-shirt picture, this was so that the clippimg mask was applied to the correct image. One thing that I think was not so successful was the image that I used in the clipping mask, I found that the image that I created, when I made it into the clipping mask, it wasnt very clear what it was of. I like that you are able to see the differnt colours and how they were layered but you are unable to see what they are made up of. Another thing that I think was not very successful was that I used a image of a t-shirt for my base t-shirt. I think if I were to do this again I would have used the pen tool to trace around the t-shirt and then I could have applied a clipping mask to the whole t-shirt making it a whole image t-shirt and I think this would have shown more of the techniques and skills that I have learnt through the term. If I was to do this again I would create the image that I used in my clipping mask differntly. I would have made the stars that I used smaller so that you can easily see what they are through the text. Alternitively I could have used a differnt text font which allowed more space for you to see the image or i could have used a shape to create the clipping mask instead of text. I would also draw around my placed image using the pen tool so I could make the whole thing into a clipping mask to show how I coukd use the technique in a differnt way.
I think that all of these tecniques could easily be applied in a creative industry. One way i think you could use the pen tool is that you could draw out your garnment designs digitally, this would be a good way to be able to test out lots of differnt colour combinations and pattern designs without having to draw out the design lots of times. You could also use the clipping mask tool to make graphic t-shirts, like I have done, this would mean that you could create lots of differnt designs using the same image or text. Another way that you could apply these tecniques to a creating industy is that you could use the pen tool, fill, swatches, gradients, placing an image and clipping mask in making logos for companies, you could combine all these differnt tecniques to create logos by drawing them out using the pen tool and appling differnt colours and effects using the other tools and clipping mask.
I hope you have enjoyed looking at my work and thankyou for reading.
