Repeating Patterns

Hello everyone,

So today I wanted to share some of the research I have done on repeating patterns for my computing class. As part of our new project we are looking at repeating patterns and the aim is for us to make our own. So, to start us off our teacher asked us to do some research into how to create repeating patterns and the processes that go into them.

There are lots of different ways that you can create repeating patterns, these include by hand/photocopies or using programs on a computer such as adobe illustrator.

I found a guide on skill share on how to create a repeat pattern by hand while doing my research, I will put the link at the end, this showed me how I could create a pattern easily. One of the ways it explained how to create a repeating pattern was by drawing your design out on to a piece of paper, you need to do this using a dark coloured pen as it will need to be photocopied, you should start your design from the middle and make sure you don’t touch the edges of the page. Then you need to cut it straight down the middle and flip the pieces over so that the pattern is now separated, you will need to tape this together on the back. You will need to repeat this by cutting your design the other way in half and tape it together on the back so now your design is now spilt up in all 4 corners. You may now have some white space in the middle, so you can fill this in so that it makes your design seamless. Now you can photocopy your design and paste them together to create your repeat pattern.

Another way of creating a repeat pattern is by using a computer program like adobe illustrator. This method is slightly more complicated, and you need access to a program to do this, you can create your design on the program putting together and editing the design, shapes and colours. Once you have filled your art board you will need to make sure that there is some of your design overhanging two of the edges, the top and left. With the overhanging images you will need to group them and past them on the opposite side of the board, this helps to make the design to look seamless. Now you need to make a clipping of the board to get rid of the excess of the overhanging images. All you have to do is copy the design and put them side by side to create a repeating pattern. I found all this information from a video I watched which I will link at the end.

Also, to start off our project we were tasked to design some of our own designs which we will create into a repeating pattern, I decided to show you guys some of them here.

Thank you for reading and i hope you enjoyed looking at my work.
